I know the NFL has a method to their madness, but does MLB have one?How does the MLB set the inter league play schedule?Copying my own stuff from ~6 months ago:
There's a vague pattern in how the divisions rotate, but it is far from perfect for various reasons -- the leagues have different numbers of member teams, MLB mandates certain preferential series that never (or almost never) get bypassed (remember, when anyone talks of "marquee matchups", they really mean "marketable matchups"), and some practical concerns on a yearly basis (primarily travel requirements).
Looking at the last three seasons:
2008 -- AL East met (in general terms) NL Central, AL Central met NL West, AL West met NL East.
2009 -- AL E met NL E, AL C met NL C, AL W met NL W.
2010 -- AL E met NL W, AL C met NL E, AL W met NL C.
Based on this cycle, the 2011 division pairings will mostly be:
AL East -- NL Central
AL Central -- NL West
AL West -- NL East
And a cursory review of some teams' 2011 schedules confirms this.
As for home/road sitings, no idea. We're now 14 seasons into interleague play and there are STILL some meetings that have occurred in only one home city, so clearly the original selling point of "fans will get to see every team" is not considered a priority by MLB (it always was lip service, but now we can establish how false it has been). How does the MLB set the inter league play schedule?Um, No.
There is no really discernible pattern in their scheduling a major league 162 game schedule.
It appears to be be what is called "random choice".
From year to year, the Scheduling Committee looks at what has gone before and it changes every year and try to fix it so the various clubs get the top drawing teams occasionally, but a pattern? No!How does the MLB set the inter league play schedule? It used to be like al east would play nl east etc. But now it's more random sometimes a team will play 3 al teams from 3 different divisions. Plus nl has 16 teams and al only has 14. So that's why sometimes during inter league play you will see a national league series in the middle of it. They have always done state rivalries like rays vs marlins, angels vs dodgers. How does the MLB set the inter league play schedule?
Basically they set that one division faces the other. So the American league east might play only the national league central. Usually they fit the games in the schedule around the end of June. They switch the division match ups every year. Idk if that's what ur asking or not.
