The whole point of the champions league in it's current big-business format is that only the big clubs have a chance of winning it. Perhaps the odd exception could occur but this is generally unlikely. The fact that not all the teams in it are CHAMPIONS is indicative of this analogy.
We need to remove the influence of Sky etc and go back to grass roots development. In Scotland the local talent is in decline. In England the same is true. Soon the game will be completely on it's knees with clubs 100's of millions in debt. This is unsustainable. The ar5e is falling out of it and it's up to the people to do something about it. Don't wait for the government to step in for they are on the payroll and in the pockets of big-business. It's up to us. Vive la revolucion.

The thing that I like about interleague play is seeing teams I don't normally see play. I don't get to see the Padres, Giants, or many other NL West teams because when they play a regular 7:00 PM game, it's 9:00 in Chicago. And I normally wouldn't stay up until midnight unless the White Sox were playing. Also, in Chicago, there is the Crosstown Classic and it's a great event in Chicago. All of the fans of the Cubs and White Sox are at a mini-war for bragging rights, and I love the emotion showed in those 2 series.
However, the aspect I don't like about interleague play is that the teams do not affect each other. A Rockies loss affects no team in the American League, no implications on the playoffs or anything, while every game played within the leagues have some sort of importance.
Right now, I can see them lessen interleague play, make it only 1 or two series, plus the one big rivalry. But I don't want to see the Crosstown Classic die out.Who wants to see Inter league games eliminated?I wouldn't miss interleague games, but recognize that they're not going to go away.
So I'd settle for having IL play trimmed back from 16-19 games per season to a more reasonable 8-10. 16 games is 10% of the season, and that's more than enough to influence postseason berths being determined by playing teams not involved in either league's pennant races -- and that's just wrong.
And, for the handful of ballyhooed marquee matchups -- Mets-Yanks, Cubs-White Sox, etc., there are far more dead dog pairings that have no built-in appeal. How does one sell Blue Jays-Rockies? Battle of the breweries? Mariners-Marlins? "Seagoing and alliterative"?
I am also a traditionalist %26amp; was'nt happy with it at first, but it brings excitement to some of the games %26amp; a playoff atmosphere. The release Thursday of the so-called Mitchell report on the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs in professional baseball has unleashed a torrent of media scandal-mongering and hypocrisy.
Most American newspapers gave the report banner headlines. Its author, former US senator, federal prosecutor and special envoy to Northern Ireland George Mitchell, had stressed in the report that, while there had been a “great deal of speculation” over which players would be named, he hoped that “the media and the public will keep that part of the report in context and will look beyond the individuals to the central conclusions.”
Of course, nearly every media outlet did the exact opposite, splashing the names and photographs of players identified as steroid users across their front pages. The New York Times even led its sports page with the headline “Naming names,” a phrase historically identified with the anti-communist witchhunts of the McCarthy era.
While 89 current and former major league players are named by Mitchell, the evidence gathered in his more than 400-page document—which took 20 months and cost $25 million—consists largely of media reports, the admissions of steroid use by players who are already out of the game and allegations made by dubious informants. One is a former New York Mets’ clubhouse attendant, Kirk Radomski, who cooperated with the investigation as part of a plea bargain over his own conviction on illegal steroid distribution, and the other a former Yankees trainer, Brian McNamee, who acted similarly to avoid prosecution.
While Mitchell said he was not advocating individual punishment, there is something very reckless about this naming of names, with players finding themselves convicted in the court of public opinion without being afforded any real opportunity to defend themselves. While some, without doubt, did use these substances, others may find themselves caught up in the general accusations, with their reputations tarnished based on evidence that is scarcely probative.
While the media has whipped up a witchhunt atmosphere around this naming of names, the central finding of the report—that the use of performance-enhancing drug is endemic in professional baseball, present in all 30 teams—is undeniable.
President Bush weighed in on the subject Friday, telling reporters that “steroids have sullied the game.”

Of course, the dangers are real, particularly to the large numbers of high school age athletes who see performance-enhancing drugs as the short-cut to the big leagues. Mitchell’s report spells out the potential price to be paid for the use of these substances. Steroids users are at risk for “psychiatric problems, cardiovascular and liver damage, drastic changes to their reproductive systems, musculoskeletal injury, and other problems.” And for users of human growth hormone the risks include “cancer, harm to their reproductive health, cardiac and thyroid problems, and overgrowth of bone and connective tissue.”
But the use of these substances by major league players could not possibly have come as a surprise to anyone involved in the game. Home run records were falling at a rate totally out of sync with previous baseball history and athletes were being physically transformed, bulking up seemingly overnight.
Mitchell himself stressed that players who elected to take performance-enhancing drugs “did not act in a vacuum.”
“Everyone involved in baseball over the past two decades—Commissioners, club officials, the Players Association, and players—shares to some extent in the responsibility for the steroids era ... an environment developed in which illegal use became widespread,” the report states.
The reality is that the use of these drugs was not only known, but was either tacitly or directly encouraged under conditions in which baseball was coming under pressure from other sports, including football and basketball, and feared losing some of its market share, particularly in the wake of the 1994 strike. More home runs was one way of getting the fans back into the ballparks.
The report added that players who do not use steroids or human growth hormone “are faced with the painful choice of either being placed at a competitive disadvantage or becoming illegal users themselves. No one should have to make that choice.”

While there was never a “golden age” of baseball, the amount of money split between the eight Chicago teammates to fix the World Series would be regarded in professional baseball circles as a pittance. Such salaries are of course dwarfed by the profits raked in off the game by team owners and media conglomerates. Meanwhile massive amounts of public money are poured into the building of new stadiums for the privately owned teams—$370 million for the Florida Marlins, officials in Miami announced this week—in which cheaper bleacher seats are eliminated for corporate sky-boxes, with attendance by corporate executives and their well-heeled clients written off as a business expense and tax break.
Yet public attention—as well as resentments and anger—is invariably directed against the players rather than the owners and the very nature of professional sports.
For the players themselves, the line separating careers offering massive financial rewards and a fall from grace—and back into the minor leagues—is exceedingly thin. Baseball, it is said, is a game of inches. The difference between a superstar and what is considered a mediocre player can be as little as five successful “at-bats” out of 100.
Highly gifted athletes, they find themselves turned into a combination of entrepreneur and saleable commodity, in which everything must be done to maintain the competitive edge. At the same time, because of the way the game is elevated to an importance totally out of proportion to its intrinsic significance, the players find themselves cast as role models, placed under the enormous pressure of living lives under relentless media scrutiny.
They play through injuries and pain and, undoubtedly, many become convinced that the performance-enhancing substances offer the only way to hang on. Mangers, club owners, agents and everyone else connected to the game have proven more than willing to look the other way as long as the players keep delivering the strikes and runs that generate profits.
The most serious maladies affecting America’s “national pastime,” will not be cured by Mitchell’s proposals for expanded drug-testing, a baseball “department of investigations” and lectures on the perils of steroids.
The intersection of professional athletics and the mass media have created an enormously profitable instrument for mass stupefaction. Millions are encouraged to live their lives vicariously through millionaire athletes, who are turned into popular icons, only to be demonized when caught in one or another inevitable scandal. These morality plays then become the means for diverting popular attention from the real crimes being carried out against working people both at home and abroad. This is the social importance of baseball to the ruling establishment, and why a state figure like Mitchell is employed in this investigation and why the president is compelled to pronounce on the matter and a congressional committee to convene hearings.
Of course, when Mitchell spoke of the “environment” that promoted the use of these drugs, he should have looked further a field than the major league clubhouses. The entire US economy has been on what amount to steroids for decades, the latest “performance-enhancing substance” consisting of subprime mortgages, which yielded massive fortunes for Wall Street’s elite, before taking their ever more terrible toll.
As for Mitchell’s warning that the use of these drugs “poses a serious threat to the integrity of the game,” such a threat deserves to be placed in the context of a government and ruling elite that has gutted the integrity of every democratic institution in America.
In the end, the question posed by the statements of distress and outrage over the Mitchell report comes down to: why should anyone expect baseball to be any different than the rest of capitalist society?

Major league baseball (and football, and basketball) soak up large amounts of government funding for stadiums and parking. If the owners are getting rich off of Player's use of illegal drugs, why should the taxpayers subsidize it?

Because baseball is one of the few business enterprises in the U.S. which has an exemption under the Sherman and Clayton Anti-Trust Acts, as well as exemptions under certain Federal labor laws like workers' safety and the like.

The release Thursday of the so-called Mitchell report on the use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs in professional baseball has unleashed a torrent of media scandal-mongering and hypocrisy.
Most American newspapers gave the report banner headlines. Its author, former US senator, federal prosecutor and special envoy to Northern Ireland George Mitchell, had stressed in the report that, while there had been a “great deal of speculation” over which players would be named, he hoped that “the media and the public will keep that part of the report in context and will look beyond the individuals to the central conclusions.”
Of course, nearly every media outlet did the exact opposite, splashing the names and photographs of players identified as steroid users across their front pages. The New York Times even led its sports page with the headline “Naming names,” a phrase historically identified with the anti-communist witchhunts of the McCarthy era.
While 89 current and former major league players are named by Mitchell, the evidence gathered in his more than 400-page document—which took 20 months and cost $25 million—consists largely of media reports, the admissions of steroid use by players who are already out of the game and allegations made by dubious informants. One is a former New York Mets’ clubhouse attendant, Kirk Radomski, who cooperated with the investigation as part of a plea bargain over his own conviction on illegal steroid distribution, and the other a former Yankees trainer, Brian McNamee, who acted similarly to avoid prosecution.
While Mitchell said he was not advocating individual punishment, there is something very reckless about this naming of names, with players finding themselves convicted in the court of public opinion without being afforded any real opportunity to defend themselves. While some, without doubt, did use these substances, others may find themselves caught up in the general accusations, with their reputations tarnished based on evidence that is scarcely probative.
While the media has whipped up a witchhunt atmosphere around this naming of names, the central finding of the report—that the use of performance-enhancing drug is endemic in professional baseball, present in all 30 teams—is undeniable.
President Bush weighed in on the subject Friday, telling reporters that “steroids have sullied the game.”

How did your parents raise you to think about inter-racial dating?
Do you teach your children the same?|||I grew up with parents who were firm believers in the fact that love doesn't come with a color chart dictating what does and doesn't go together and I intend on making sure my daughter believes the same thing. :o)|||They didn't raise me to think about it because it doesn't matter. It's not a subject worth giving thought. If a girl is cool and attractive it doesn't matter what color she is.|||Well, my parents didn't really say anything about it. I see everyone the same regardless of race. I will teach my kids the same thing.|||My parents taught me that love is love, no matter what, and I have every intention of teaching my future children the same. ;3|||eh one was for whatever i wanted, the other was viciously opposed. I'm open, love who you will, colors don't matter. I'm not about to tell her she can't love someone because of how they look.|||They are racist. They would not have been happy with me.
We have always told our kids that color/ race doesn't matter and we mean that. My daughter has a boyfriend right now of a different race.
*Of course- she's in middle school and she'll have a new bf in a month. but what the hey.|||I was never really taught about it, we never talked about it. My sister dated a black guy and no one ever said anything about it. I am teaching my kids I do not care as long as the person treats them good, takes care of them emotionally and I think that as long as the person is here in the country LEGALLY and is a well rounded person with a head on their shoulders it does not matter. I mean if you take away the skin we would all look the same. at least I think we all bleed red...... RIGHT????|||It never came up as something of importance one way or the other. From my parents or to my kids.
Then again, my parents were an interracial couple (Black and Mexican) and the father of my children is white.|||My parents encouraged me to only date within my ethnic community. I think it is very important not to inter-racial date because minorities are impossible to understand because they are vastly different and have absolutely nothing to do with other races...... in conclusion, bad ideaaa.|||My father doesn't have a problem with my husband being black. He has black friends. He only has an issue with my husband being Muslim. My mom's side of the family doesn't like blacks. Racism isn't allowed in Islam.|||I'm bi-racial, so all my dating was pretty much interracial. They didn't have teach anything, they led by example.|||Never came up. But we weren't raised to have any issue with it. I've been with a half black person and an Arabic person, and I'm white. Nobody says anything. I'll be like that with my kids. Principles over race.|||my parents didnt teach me anyway.they just told me date who you want.plus it wasnt like they really had to teach me anything because i am bi-racial(mom white,dad black).it just so happens that ive only dated black guys.because i am more attracted to them.i do not discriminate though.my boyfriend right now is black and we've been together for a year.=)

My parents taught me that people come in all shapes, sizes, and different colors but they are really no different from me the outside doesn't make them a good or bad person. I haven't taught my children anything about inter-racial dating yet, they're way too young [5 %26amp; 2] but since their Aunt [my SIL] was in an inter-racial relationship that produced 2 bi-racial babies, I will never say anything ill of the situation. I love my nieces to pieces, but their father is a stereotypical deadbeat.
A person is a person, no matter what color they are. You fall in love with a person, not a color.|||My parents were for whatever made me happy and supported my choices. But, I was strongly cautioned that being with someone very different from yourself -- be it religiously, age-wise or ethnically -- can make it more difficult for a relationship to work when you are coming form two completely different places and points of reference.|||My parents have never mentioned anything to me about race, because it doesn't matter. However, I do feel like my mum would be disappointed if I married/dated a Muslim man. I think this is just because of the negative media attention they always get in Australia, especially that woman whose husband left her and took her children back to the Middle East and she never saw them again. She thinks that happens all the time now, even though I know it doesn't. She'd still respect my decision, and I know she would treat anyone I date the same, regardless of race once she meets them.
I will teach my children not to judge by a persons race, because its not significant at all. A persons race does not define their character, and it shouldn't be the reason we do/do not date someone.

There are some people that think that it matters but it really doesn't. I pretty much transferred that to dating. They are two people dating each other no different than two people with the same color skin dating. Some people think it's different that it matters but it doesn't.
