The memory of all the death and destruction was still very fresh in the minds of the French like it was in the minds of the British. They didn't see Hitler as a major threat to them right off, like with the rest of the world they saw Hitler as a "guard dog" against Communist Russia. Many seemed to feel that Russia was more of a threat than the Germans.
