What is the difference between the inter quartile range and the full range?

what does each one actually depict?What is the difference between the inter quartile range and the full range?The range is the difference between the highest and lowest value. The IQR is the difference between the lower quartile and upper quartile in a set of date. Eg. In a set up numbers 1 - 100



Range = 100

Lower Quartile = 25 (25% of the total)

Upper Quartile = 75 (75% of the total)

IQR = 50 (UQ - LQ)



Inter quartile ranges are used because the vaules at the two extremes of the data are ignored, which can often provide a more realistic analysis of the data.What is the difference between the inter quartile range and the full range?The interquartile range is smaller than the full range.



Full range is max - min. IQR is Q3 - Q1. Hopefully you understand that notation.



The data withing the IQR are the most reliable data. Data outside the IQR can usually be dismissed, becuase they are considered outliers.What is the difference between the inter quartile range and the full range?say you have a sample of 100 people, then the full range is the difference between the higest and lowest value of whatever you are recording (eg height, weight).



Now, for the IQR you must order the statistics from lowest to highest (or vice versa). The IQR is then simply the difference between the 75th and 25th value. That is to say, the IQR is value which is 75% highest minus the value which is 25% highest.



eg take values



2,5, 8, 6, 4, 3, 9, 1, 0, 4, 7, 2, 4.



I now order them:



0,1, 2, 2 ,3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.



The full range is 9.



The IQR is the (0.75 x 12=) 9th value minus (0.25x12=) 3rd vale



= 6 -2 = 4
