How do you set up the settings .i hook up a internet cord to my belkin straight to the computer and the inter?

how do i fix this problem i hooked up the internet cord from my belkin to my hp computer desk top. but the internet will not work .How do you set up the settings .i hook up a internet cord to my belkin straight to the computer and the inter? The most obvious.. you need an ethernet cord plugged into the rear of the modem and into the belkin (presuming the belkin is some type of routing device, you don't specify). Then an ethernet cable plugged from the belkin to your HP. If this is done, turn off your computer and unplug from power both the belkin and your modem for 30 seconds allowing the capacitors within each to discharge. After 30 seconds, reconnect to power your modem. Give it a minute. Then plug in your belkin. Give it a minute. Then start your computer.

If you still cannot get on the Internet, somewhere on the belkin is a reset button that you can push with a tooth pick or something as small. Hold the button in until the lights change their pattern on the belkin then release. Give it a minute. Restart your computer.

Now, do know, if you the belkin is a wireless router with security enabled and/or you have other settings configured within the belkin, they will be lost clicking the reset button.

If after clicking the reset button you still don't have Internet, then there is a possibility the modem and router are both setup as DHCP servers and both using the same Local (Private IP) in which case, an IP conflict will occur thus causing your Internet connection problem. The easiest remedy for that is to change the Local (Private) IP on your router. If it comes to this point, add additional details stating so or post a new question on "How do I change the Local IP on a belkin router."
