I was considering to put a turbocharger in my stock 1990 Chevy 454 SS truck. I don't know if I'll have to tune up some other of my engine parts like the transmission or stock rods and crankshafts. Can someone tell me if it's worth the money? And what else can I buy to increase some gas mileage? Can a stock 454 big block handle a turbocharger with an inter-cooler and what helps with more gas mileage?opposite to what Mustard says about turbos hurting gas mileagee, turbos actually help gasmileagee because the engine (using waste exhaust gasses) feeds itself air rather than having to work to get it naturally aspirated. Now on to your question, your engine can handle low amounts of boost but if you are looking to put more PSI into it you will need to get copperhead gaskets to make sure you don't blow out the original ones. Can a stock 454 big block handle a turbocharger with an inter-cooler and what helps with more gas mileage?im sure it can handle low boost but dont v8's generally get superchargers? btw, a turbo or supercharger will hurt gas mileage
where the air comes from has nothing to do with fuel economy, the turbo forces more air into the engine and the engine has to use more fuel to burn it so therefore it gets worse gas mileage
